Everything’s bigger in Texas, and the huge granite dome of Enchanted Rock is no exception! In fact, it is one of the largest pink granite batholiths in the country at over 640 acres. Climbers flock to “E-Rock,” as the locals call it, for a variety of climbing – especially crack. Enchanted Rock climbing also encompasses plenty of slab, some sport, and boulders, too.
A Guide to Enchanted Rock Climbing
Enchanted Rock is the place to get your granite fix when climbing in Texas. In fact, it is the only publicly owned and accessible granite climbing area in the state. The climbing consists of plentiful crack climbing as well as traditionally bolted (runout) slabs. You can also find a few sport routes at Enchanted Rock, but the options are very limited.
Renowned climber Duane Raleigh spent lots of time on the granite of Enchanted Rock, and 1970s first ascensionist Bill Horton still climbs there regularly.

Enchanted Rock Climbing Areas
Here are a couple great crags to check out during your Enchanted Rock climbing adventure.
Triple Cracks Sanctuary
For moderate crack climbs, head to the Triple Crack area in Echo Canyon. With a bunch of cracks ranging from 5.7 to 5.10 (and a couple harder routes that can be toproped), crack addicts can jam the day away here on quality routes.
Turkey Peak
If you like clipping bolts, head to Turkey Peak for the best concentration of sport routes at Enchanted Rock. The wall is high up on the peak, so it’s a cool position with great views. You’ll find a handful of easy to moderate sport routes (5.8/5.9) here, as well as a fun 5.11b (Mighty Dog).
Enchanted Rock Climbing Groups & Events
To help preserve access to climbing in Enchanted Rock, the Central Texas Climbing Committee (CTCC) advises the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission on rock climbing issues and helps monitor and maintain fixed protection on climbing routes. Outpost Wilderness owner James Faerber is invested in the Texas climbing community as a member of the CTCC.
Granite Gripper
Every year, the Central Texas Climbing Committee hosts a fundraising event called the Granite Gripper for the local climbing community. All proceeds from the event go to Friends of Enchanted Rock to help with maintaining bolts, climbing hardware, and hiking trails in Enchanted Rock.
The Granite Gripper is the longest running trad climbing competition in North America, and the weekend also features several clinics including intro to trad climbing, building and cleaning sport anchors, rock rescue, and more. There is also a party for the climbing community to come together and celebrate!
The 32nd Annual Granite Gripper will take place December 7th, 2024. Find out more and register for Granite Gripper events here.
