For the last four years we have had the pleasure of working with Baylor Outdoor Adventure during their line camp in July. Baylor University offers a pretty amazing program for incoming freshmen from all over the US. These students have the opportunity to travel to Colorado and attend a week long adventure.
I have only watched this group as a spectator for little bits and pieces of their trip but everyone always seems to be having a blast. They arrive at our base camp Bison Peak Lodge inn Tarryall mountains and get to know each other through leadership games, dinner and lots of laughter. The following morning the group loads up and heads to The Valley of the Chickens. They spend the better part of the day sport climbing and cheering each other on.
They return to Bison Peak Lodge to pack up for their backpacking trip into Lost Creek Wilderness. I’ve never been on their trip but am usually waiting at the lodge upon their return. They tend to be coming back all smiles and even happier after a hot shower. The leaders has a cold soda waiting for them and its almost amusing to watch them take their first sip of a cold refreshing drink after a few days of warm water.
The following day is an early departure to one of my favorite towns in Colorado, Buena Vista. They spend the morning rafting, the afternoon on around town and a great pizza dinner at a local joint. One year I went to the town with them and as I explored on my own I saw several different small groups. They seemed to be having some pretty deep conversations with lots of laughter. Going off to college is a huge milestone. And having a group that you have bonded too and can go to is seriously priceless.
We love having this group to the lodge every year. There are university staff as well as student leaders all seem to share a true desire to guide and assist these incoming students. They are well prepared and have some of the best food prep I have ever seen for an outdoor group. I wish I had been fortunate enough to attend a college program such as this. Those who attend will have life long memories and may also have an easier transition into the college life.
