For many Scouts, earning the Rock Climbing Merit Badge is more than just checking off a requirement—it’s a moment where courage, teamwork, and the thrill of the outdoors come together. Recently, a group of eager Scouts experienced exactly that during an unforgettable climbing weekend led by Outpost Wilderness Adventure at Enchanted Rock. Rising dramatically above the Texas Hill Country, Enchanted Rock is one of the most iconic climbing destinations in the state. Its massive pink granite dome offers routes for beginners and seasoned climbers alike, making it the perfect classroom for Scouts learning the fundamentals of safe climbing.
Outpost Wilderness Adventure brought experienced guides including AMGA Rock Guide, OWA Owner and Eagle Scout James Faerber as well as professional-grade gear, and a passion for outdoor education to the event. From the moment the Scouts arrived in the parking lot, the day was filled with excitement and learning. Guides began with an introduction to climbing safety, covering essential skills such as proper harness fitting, helmet use, knot tying, and communication between climbers and belayers.

Before long, Scouts were practicing belaying under the watchful eye of their instructors. Learning how to manage ropes and support a fellow climber from the ground helped reinforce the importance of trust and responsibility—core values that align perfectly with the Scout Law.
With safety systems in place, it was time to climb.
One by one, Scouts stepped up to the granite wall. Some approached with confidence, others with a mix of excitement and nerves. But with encouragement from guides and fellow troop members, each Scout took their turn moving up the rock face. As hands searched for solid holds and feet pressed against the textured granite, determination replaced hesitation.
At the top of the route, the reward was more than just the view across the Hill Country. It was the realization that something once intimidating had become achievable through perseverance and teamwork.

Throughout the day, Outpost Wilderness Adventure instructors continued teaching the skills required for the Rock Climbing Merit Badge. Scouts learned about climbing equipment, route safety, environmental stewardship, and the importance of respecting natural spaces like Enchanted Rock.
Between climbs, the group shared stories, cheered each other on, and enjoyed the camaraderie that makes Scouting such a powerful experience. By the end of the session, many Scouts had completed key requirements for their merit badge—and gained a newfound confidence along the way.
Programs like this highlight the value of skilled outdoor instruction. With proper guidance, young adventurers can safely explore activities that challenge them physically and mentally while building character and resilience.
For these Scouts, the towering granite of Enchanted Rock wasn’t just a climbing destination—it became a place where they learned to trust themselves, support one another, and reach new heights.
And for Outpost Wilderness Adventure, it was another successful day doing what they love most: helping the next generation discover the power of adventure.
